At the start everyone is at rest. For someone to win, there must be an acceleration from rest to initiate motion in one direction. This acceleration need not be large. During the acceleration there must be a net force on each person in the direction of the acceleration.
(a) and (b) are wrong because the rope has relatively small mass, so the tension forces at its ends are nearly the same size (F =ma where m is essentially zero). Certainly any small difference in tension between the two ends is nowhere near great enough to account for the outcome. The complexity of the IIT-JEE arises from the fact that the questions are always unique in their context, and solving them often requires a combination of concepts from across different chapters. Nonetheless, some basic data analysis can be quite revealing and could give some important insights into how one should go about preparing for each subject. Such analyses form the basis of our understanding of the JEE. The section-wise breakup of marks in the past four years (2001-2004) JEE Screening has been given below for your reference.

PHYSICS
'Electrostatics and Current Electricity', and 'Electromagnetism'-each of these topics has contributed about 15% to the total marks in the past four years. Students should devote about 30% of their preparation time to the coverage of Electromagnetism and Electrostatics; because together they constitute almost one-third of the total marks and can be more scoring as the degree of difficulty when compared to Mechanics is relatively low.

'Optics' too contributes approximately 13% to the IIT-JEE test ,it has been observed that problems on Physical optics are more frequent than that on Geometrical optics. Students should take care to devote about 10% of time on Optics for robust preparation.

In the past four years, approximately 20% of the total marks pertain to Mechanics. Within Mechanics, the favorite topics seem to be 'Rigid Body Rotation' and 'Motion on a Plane'. Topics like 'Simple Harmonic Motion' and 'Work and Energy', on the other hand, have been accorded relatively less priority for these years. Apparently, students have to be thoroughly prepared with Mechanics as it forms almost one-fifth of the whole JEE Screening paper. It is important for students to realize that Mechanics though important, takes relatively more time for preparation. Thus, they should restrict their preparation of Mechanics to about 30% of the total time. The next important topics are 'Modern Physics' and 'Thermal Physics', each commanding a share of about 12% of the total marks. These topics can be covered thoroughly in a relatively less time (10% of total time can be allocated to each topic); therefore, a student should look at exhaustively preparing for these topics.]

The last but not the least, 'Mechanical Waves' (sound) has accounted for approximately 12% of the total marks. Students can prepare for Wave Motion by restricting their total time spent on this particular topic to about 10%.

CHEMISTRY
'Organic Chemistry' has the highest weightage with mean marks of 36%. Topics like 'Isomerism' and 'Name Reactions', and 'Stability of reaction intermediates' should be thoroughly covered. It is easier to remember the reactions and conversions involving aromatic compounds and a considerable percentage of questions from organic chemistry are based on this part. An understanding of directive influence of substituent groups, resonance and mechanism of reactions definitely helps in cracking the problems of organic chemistry.

'Physical Chemistry' is a close second with a mean weightage of 33%. In fact, questions on physical chemistry are all numerical in nature. Problems on topics like 'Electrochemistry', 'Kinetics', and 'Chemical and Ionic Equilibrium' are always asked either directly or along with some other topic. Students are advised to cover all the topics of physical chemistry. This is an area in which students can be sure of hundred percent score, provided they have a clear understanding of the concepts and a good practice of solving problems within recommended time.

'Inorganic Chemistry' and 'General Chemistry' account for 21% and 10% of the total marks. Inorganic Chemistry should be prepared by studying the group properties and periodicity. Lots of emphasis has to be given to Exceptions. Questions are asked from these topics invariably. The properties of some important compounds are also asked in the form of reactions. Remembering the reactions involved in qualitative analysis is of great advantage. Questions asked in General Chemistry mostly include that from 'Stoichiometry' and 'Chemical Bonding'.

MATHEMATICS
'Calculus' accounts for about 30% of the total marks in JEE Screening. Students can score a high percentage of marks by firmly grasping the fundamentals of Calculus. More emphasis should be given in preparing 'Functions', 'Increasing/Decreasing Functions', and 'Maxima/ Minima of Functions'.

In Integral Calculus, students must practice problems on 'Definite Integral' with a proper understanding of the use of their properties for evaluation.

In 'Area of Regions Bounded by Curves', students should take care to draw figures for obtaining the limits of the integrals to be evaluated.

'Algebra' has a weightage of about 23% of the total marks. Students should emphasize practicing only those topics that have been well understood by them. Since problems on Algebra are trickier, students must practice solving as many different types of problems as they can.

'Analytical Geometry' has a weightage of about 20% of the total marks. It is also a conceptual topic. Before solving a problem, students must draw figures of the given curves to understand the problem.

The topics of 'Vectors and 3-D Geometry' and 'Probability' have a weightage of approximately 6% each. These also have to be thoroughly prepared.

'Trigonometry' carries a weightage of about 9%. It has been observed that this weightage was as high as 17% in JEE Screening 2001 and as low as 4% in JEE Screening 2003. Students, anyways, must be thorough with the topics of 'Inverse functions', 'Solutions of Trigonometric Equations', and 'Solution of Triangles'. The formulae and standard results of trigonometry must be learnt by heart in order to do well in the Mathematics paper.

Please note that the JEE is not about scoring 100% in a subject or the examination. Your aim should be to attain an optimal score in each subject, depending on your strengths and weaknesses.

The Proposal: 27 percent reservation for Other Backward Classes(OBCs) to be implemented in centrally funded universities including IITs,IIMs,AIIMS and other medical colleges.Demographic facts: The Mandal Commission stated that 52 percent of India was classified under OBC status. However they used data from 1952. Present day data from NSSO tells us that 32.1 percent of the country can be classified as OBCs. It also mentions that 23 percent of college seats are occupied by students belonging to OBC category.

Case for Reservation for OBCs

1. The OBCs have been discriminated against in the past and are currently being discriminated against. This discrimination takes two forms: social and economic. Economically these students do not have access to educational facilities such as good public schools, good private schools and good coaching schools. Socially these students are induced to believe that respect in society and good economic status is the preserve of the forward castes by birth.
2. The aim of the government, society at large and the constitution is to promote 'egalitarianism'’.
3. The way to achieve this aim is to reserve seats for OBCs at all levels of educational institutions and government job positions.

Case against Reservations for OBCs
1. Access to educational institutions such as IITs/IIMs/AIIMS and medical colleges should only be based on 'merit'’ since the stated aim of these institutes is to produce academic elites .
2. Due to reservations , the quality of the students entering and leaving the institutions shall decrease.
3. This will reduce the opportunity for the '’forward castes' to study at these educational institutions.
4. The seats shall be used by rich OBCs, the creamy layer. This represents an injustice as these people have no need for a reservation . 5. The OBCs cannot be treated on par with the SC/STs.

IITs oppose reservation in faculty recruitment

The IITs are opposed to reservation in the recruitment of faculty members and sought to be exempted as they were institutes of national importance.IIT-Guwahati director Prof Gautam Barua told said that the IITs for the last 36 years had no reservation in recruitment of faculty members.However, recently officials from the Centre had informed the IITs that reservation for teacher recruitment would have to be implemented as they were not included in the 1972 government order exempting reservation for scientists and researchers in nationally important institutions of the Department of Space, Atomic Energy and Defence, Barua said.
The Indian Institutes of Technology were de facto also included in the list of exempted institutes, he said.
Besides verbally opposing the reservation move, he said, the directors of all the IITs recently at a meeting decided to write to the government and Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to include them in the 1972 order.

FITJEE follows monthly batch shifting technique, better quality of tests, more no. of assignments but in teaching it is good only till problems it lacks in conceptual building and misconception blocking.

Narayana follows yearly batch shifting technique, good tests and assignments but is better in teaching than fitjee.

Other coaching institutes like bt,pie are a lighter versions of narayna and fitjee.

Bansal kota is good in all the areas mentioned above but its only for those who sacrifice their school life and study their for two or 1 year at kota.you would have classes everyday so you would have less time for self study that’s the only drawback, but even though it’s a good institute you miss out growth in other parts of life which you can learn only from schooling.

How many hours should I study at home?

Some of you out there must be toppers of your class or among the top 10% of your class. But that is just a performance in your class or best at a school level. It means till now you have been competing among a small student base of 50 - 1000 students.

But once you start preparing for IITJEE or AIEEE entrance, the competition is huge. This year in 2008, over 3.2 lakh students appeared in IITJEE and over 9 lakh in AIEEE. So my advice is that you seriously need to scale up your efforts to face the competition.

Are you ready for this?

You need to prepare yourself mentally as well as physically to face this competition. Mentally, you need to think wide when you think of competition you are facing. Remember there are more than 10000 schools (just CBSE) in India. So don’t get defocused and remember that you have to compete with unknowns.

Most of you would have scored well in your school level examinations by not even spending 20 hours on studies at home. This is not going to be enough with such a huge competition. You need to scale up your efforts and set a target of 30-35 hours studies at home every week.

But just sitting in front of the books for these 30-35 hours is not enough. You have to study with full concentration, no disturbance, and continuously for 3 hour sessions. The idea is to simulate real exam conditions. While studying, you have to create an atmosphere as if you are sitting in exam. Avoid doing following during a 3 hours session:

Study on a desk if you have it at home. Avoid studying while lying down on a bed.
Don’t get up from your desk during 3 hours of study session. Even not for drinking water.
Don’t listen music during studies. If you have a habit, then slowly come out of it by reducing it day by day.
No phone calls and no SMS during studies.
Study with 100 percent concentration as if you are sitting in exam.

Note: to make up 50-55 hours you need to study 3-5 hours every day during the week and remaining 15 hours over the weekend.

Things you should start avoiding immediately

Remember that for next 2 years you have to give your best to get admission in a good college. So to take out 55 hours every week, you need to sacrifice some of your time sucking activities.

If you are involved in any of the following activities mentioned below, I suggest you should stop it immediately:

Avoid too much socializing: Avoid too much talking on phone with your friends. Not more than 15-30 minutes every day. Keep yourself away from family discussions. Don’t get into arguments with parents and brothers/sisters. It just wastes your time and energy. Be selfish to focus on your career. Say NO or avoid social functions and visits at relatives.

Avoid long hours on TV, Internet and games: TV serials, movies, matches are real time and energy suckers. If you are too much into TV, cut down immediately. Don’t spend more than 1 hour in front of TV every day.

Internet is the biggest addiction of all time. Real time sucker. Don’t sit on computer for more than 1 hour unless you have to appear for 100percentile tests. To save your time you need to choose TV or Internet browsing or video games. Don’t spend more than 1 hour average daily on any of these activities.

Avoid outdoor sports: Those who are playing physical games a lot should reduce them or should stop them. These games are very tiring. If you are physically tired, you would not be able to concentrate on studies. So for physical activities, I suggest evening walk or light exercise either in the morning or evening.

Avoid night-outs : Those who study late nights, sleep whole day. This is a bad schedule. If you don’t sleep well in the night, you will feel sleepy in school and in your coaching classes. So best is you should sleep for 7 hours any time between 10 PM to 9 AM. Those who don’t get study atmosphere at home in the day time, in worst case they should study till 2.00 AM and get up at 9.00 AM.

Avoid too long or two short sleep hours: It you are sleeping more than 8 hours, stop it immediately. You should target for 7 hours sleep every day. Also avoid day time sleeping for more than 90 minutes. Preferably it should be a nap of 1 hour. Those you could manage to sleep less, I would not recommend a sleep of less than 5-6 hours. If body is tired, mind cannot function properly.

Avoid going to school daily: If you can manage to take school leaves, then you should go school less. But don’t take off from school regularly. I suggest that if possible, go to school not more than 4 times a week. School studies are not going to play important role in your career at this stage. Even school studies should be done just before the exams say 1-2 weeks before exams.

IIT Rajasthan

IIT Rajasthan is one among the new set of IITs announced by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India. The location of the IIT in Rajasthan will be announced by the Govt. of India after completion of the formalities of land acquisition for setting up the new IIT in Rajasthan. However, in the meantime, IIT Kanpur has been designated as the mentor IIT for looking after the incubation activities of the new IIT in Rajasthan. The Golden Jubilee Extension Centre of IIT Bombay is currently located at this College. Students will be provided with residential and other facilities at a temporary location. The curriculum will be similar to that of IIT Bombay with some differences until the time the academic bodies of the new IIT is in place.

IIT Punjab

Indian Institute of Technology Punjab is one of the new IITs announced by Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. IIT Punjab will be located at Roopnagar (formerly Ropar), along the bank of the Sutlej river, about 50 kms from Chandigarh. However, since the setting up of the new IIT in its final location will take some time, IIT Delhi has been assigned the job of incubating IIT Punjab.

To start with, a 4-year B.Tech programme is being offered in three branches, viz., Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering with a strength of 40 students in each branch. The curriculum, course structure and syllabus for the first year courses is broadly similar to (but not identical to) that in IIT Delhi. The first year classes are being held at the IIT Delhi campus, and the students admitted will be relocated to Roopnagar from the second year onwards.

IIT Patna's academic programs commenced from 6th August 2008. IIT Hyderabad

IIT Hyderabad is being mentored by IIT Madras. The academic programme of IITH was launched on 19 August 2008. This Institute has opened its doors to its first batch of students - a total of 111 students (102 boys and 9 girls) in three streams - in the B.Tech programmes in Electrical Engineering (EE), Mechanical Engineering (ME), and Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) in 2008. It is currently located in the campus of the Ordnance Factory (OFMK) in Yeddumailaram .The academic zone, hostels and residential area (53 quarters) are all within the OFMK campus. The IITH campus is, 45 km from Secunderabad Railway Station and 42 km from Jubilee Bus Stand in Secunderabad. The second batch of students joining in the 2009-2010 academic session, and will be housed in the temporary campus on Ordnance Factory Estate itself in Yeddumailaram. The permanent campus is located on the National Highway 9 at Kandi village (near Sangareddy town, in Medak District, Andhra Pradesh). The 212-hectare land will become operational with its first set of buildings and structures by the summer of 2010; the third academic year onwards, students will join the permanent campus directly.

The foundation stone of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) at Indore has been laid by Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister, Arjun Singh.500 acres of land have been allocated for the institution by the State Government. This new IIT will be mentored by the IIT, Mumbai, and will start classes from coming academic session 2009-10.In the first year IIT, Indore will offer courses in 3 branches of engineering: Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. Each of these courses will have an intake of 40 students, thereby making a total strength of 120 students in the first year of its operation."

The academic session in the two new IITs (IIT Indore and IIT Himachal Pradesh) will commence from the academic year 2009-2010 with a total of 120 seats in each of them. The admissions will be through JEE-2009.

Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University) is a candidate to become an IIT

IT BHU, owes its existence to the far-sighted vision and relentless efforts of its founder Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya. During the days of freedom struggle, three engineering and technological institutions were established by Malviyaji, viz. the Banaras Engineering College (BENCO) in 1919, the College of Mining and Metallurgy (MINMET) in 1923 and the College of Technology (TECHNO). The first-ever degree courses in Mining, Metallurgy, Ceramics and Pharmaceutics in India were pioneered at BHU. After our country became independent, post graduate and doctoral research programmes were also introduced. It is an established history that BENCO, MINMET and TECHNO produced outstanding engineers who manned various industries, academic institutions, R & D Labs and others, thus providing the much needed technological leadership/skills in various sectors of indigenous development.

After the establishment of the Indian Institutes of Technology in 1971, the three premier engineering institutions of our University viz., BENCO, MINMET and TECHNO were merged to form the Institute of Technology (IT-BHU) to provide a strong and integrated educational base. To preserve its excellence and national character, the earlier system of region-wise admission (via merit lists) was replaced by admission procedures through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE of the IITs) for undergraduate courses and Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE conducted by the IITs & IISc.) for the post-graduate courses. A candidate has to satisfy ALL the eligibility conditions given below:

A candidate can attempt JEE only twice, in consecutive years. Those who have appeared in JEE in 2007 or earlier are not eligible for appearing in JEE-2009.
Candidates appearing in JEE-2009 should have either passed the qualifing examinationin 2008 or should be appearing in 2009. They should also satisfy the specific eligibility criteria in the qualifying examination. Candidates who have passed the qualifying examination before October 1, 2007 are not eligible to write JEE-2009.
Candidates should meet the age requirements given below.
Candidates should NOT have accepted admission by paying full fees at any of the IITs, IT-BHU, Varanasi or ISMU, Dhanbad, through earlier JEE.

Qualifying Examination

Candidates applying for JEE-2009 should have either passed after October 1, 2007, or should be appearing in 2009 in any one of the following qualifying examinations.

The final examination of the 10+2 system, conducted by any recognized Central/State Board, such as Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi; Council for Indian School Certificate Examination, New Delhi; etc.
Intermediate or two-year Pre-University Examination conducted by a recognized Board/ University.
Final Examination of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defence Academy.
General Certificate Education (GCE) Examination (London/Cambridge/Sri Lanka) at the Advanced (A) level.
High School Certificate Examination of the Cambridge University.
Any Public School/Board/University Examination in India or in any foreign country recognized by the Association of Indian Universities as equivalent to the 10+2 system.
H.S.C. Vocational Examination.
Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Open School with a minimum of five subjects.
3 or 4-year Diploma recognized by AICTE or a State Board of Technical Education.

In case the relevant qualifying examination is not a public examination, the candidate must have passed at least one public (Board or Pre-University) examination at an earlier level.

Eligibility Criteria in Qualifying Examination

Candidates belonging to General (GE), Other Backward Classes (OBC) and DS categories must secure at least 60% marks in aggregate in their Qualifying Examination. Candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Physically Disabled (PD) categories must secure at least 55% marks in aggregate in the Qualifying Examination. The percentage of marks awarded by the Board will be treated as final. If the Board does not award the percentage of marks, it will be calculated based on the marks obtained in all subjects listed in the mark sheet. If any Board awards only letter grades without providing an equivalent percentage of marks on the grade sheet, the candidate should obtain a certificate from the Board specifying the equivalent marks, and submit it at the time of counselling. In case such a certificate is not provided by the candidate, then the decision of the Joint Implementation Committee of JEE-2009 regarding his/her eligibility shall be final.

Important Notes

Those candidates who will be appearing in the qualifying examination in 2010 or later are not eligible to apply for JEE-2009.
All provisional admissions to candidates who are appearing in the qualifying examination in the year 2009 will stand cancelled, if the proof of having passed the Qualifying Examination, as per the eligibility criteria specified above is not submitted to the concerned Institute latest by September 30, 2009. If a Board normally declares the results of the qualifying examination after 30^th September of each year, students of such Boards are advised to attempt JEE in the following year.
All admissions are subject to verification of facts from the original certificates/documents of the candidates. If an applicant is found ineligible at a later date even after admission to an Institute, his/her admission will be cancelled. The decision of the Joint Admission Board of JEE-2009 regarding the eligibility of any applicant shall be final.

Age Requirements

For GE and OBC categories, only those candidates whose date of birth falls on or after October 01, 1984, are eligible to appear in JEE-2009. For SC, ST, and PD categories, candidates who were born on or after October 01, 1979, are eligible. Date of birth as recorded in the High School/first Board/Pre-University Certificate will be taken as authentic. If the high school certificate does not mention the date of birth, provide a suitable document indicating the date of birth along with the application. Candidates must produce this certificate in original as a proof of their age at the time of counselling, failing which they will be disqualified.

Physical Fitness

All qualified candidates will have to submit a Physical Fitness certificate from a Registered Medical Practitioner in the prescribed format that will be made available to them at an appropriate time. They will be admitted only if they are physically fit for pursuing a course of study at the participating institutes.

Special Requirements for Mining Engineering and Mining Machinery Courses

Candidates opting for these courses should make sure that they do not have any form of colour blindness. They will be required to submit a certificate from a Registered Medical Practitioner to this effect at the time of counselling. The standard of visual acuity with or without glasses will be adhered to strictly for candidates seeking admission to Mining Engineering as per DGMS Circular 14 of 1972. Persons with one-eyed vision are not permitted to work underground. Candidates with above limitations are not allowed to opt for admission to Mining Engineering or Mining Machinery Engineering.

Female Candidates for Mining Courses

Section 46 (1) of the Mines Act, 1952 states that “No woman shall, notwithstanding anything contained in any other law, be employed (a) in any part of a mine which is below ground, (b) in any mine above ground except between the hours 6 a.m. and 7 p.m.”. Female candidates are not admitted to Mining Engineering and Mining Machinery Engineering at ISMU, Dhanbad, whereas the corresponding programmes at IIT Kharagpur and IT-BHU, Varanasi, have no such restriction.

In today's society, almost all students and parents judge success by the first paycheck . So, if you visit the places where students discuss which college to join, the most important questions are: how is the placement, how many companies came for placement, what was the highest salary offered, and so on .There are many streams which don’t fetch you a good package in the beginning like chemical , metallurgical ,production engineering etc ,but if your core knowledge is good , sky is the limit .Core engineers are required every where. People don't want to know whether students of that college are going for higher studies, mostly students opt for IT and cs for the same reason as well ‘the initial package’ . Higher education abroad is a very good asset as it changes your work completely ur job becomes more research oriented .

Even if money is important to you, shouldn't the career earnings be more important that the first paycheck. And that, as I said above, will depend a whole lot more on quality of education than the first paycheck. And the quality of education is primarily driven by quality of faculty. So, if there is only one thing that you want to check in a website, it is the quality of faculty.

The things one should look in a institute are-

The most important component that goes into making a good institution is a good faculty. So when you visit the website of a department, look for the following information:

Number of full-time faculty members. Please make sure that you read the details, and find out who is a full-time faculty member, and who is a part-time or adjunct faculty member.
Their qualificiations. How many are PhDs. Where did they do their PhDs. Similarly, how many faculty members are having MTech qualification. Where did they do their MTech.
If a significant portion of faculty received their highest degree (whether PhD, MTech, or BTech) from the same college, then that should raise some alarms. On the other hand, faculty members having a lower degree from the same college, implies that they value the place enough that they returned back to the same place after getting a higher degree from elsewhere.
If the highest qualification for any faculty member is MCA, then be alarmed. Top places will only higher PhDs. Good places may have some MTechs. But if colleges are hiring BTechs and MCAs for teaching courses, it means that they are not able to attract enough good faculty, and that should be a cause for concern.
What are faculty doing. Are they teaching three courses a semester or two. Are they doing at least some bit of research publications.

Look at the Curriculum of the college. If the college is a deemed university, only then it has the flexibility of deciding its own curriculum. Otherwise, it has to follow what the university prescribes. Some of the things to look for in the curriculum are:

How many courses do they teach. Unlike the conventional wisdom in India, I believe that the college that teaches you less is a better college. It means that they do less spoon feeding, and give you more space to grow and learn. If you look at international examples, MIT and other top universities have as low as 32 courses as the requirement for undergraduate degree. The next level universities in US require upto 36 courses for the undergraduate program. In India, IITs and the other top departments usually have 40-42 courses in the undergraduate curriculum. Some of the deemed universities require around 45 courses, and many of the universities require even 60 courses in the undergraduate curriculum. There are surely exceptions to this general trend, but by and large colleges will try to teach you more, if they know that they are doing a poor job of teaching, and hope that if they try teaching you lots, then perhaps in some courses they will be able to teach you something.
How many electives are there in the curriculum, giving flexibility to the students to learn what they are interested in. Many colleges may have slots for electives, but they treat that slot as their choice to offer a course. So they won't offer three courses, and ask students to chose one. But instead they will offer one course of their own choice (basically for whatever course they can find a faculty). Also, in most colleges, the curriculum will only contain professional electives, but no open electives.
Do they have enough number of humanities and social science courses (at least 10 percent courses).

How is the Infrastructure at the college. Now, this is something that most colleges will score equally well. In CS/IT areas, what you really need is a bunch of PCs with some standard softwares, something that increasingly students are anyway affording on their own. But still there are pieces of infrastructure that the college has to provide. Also, how good is their support staff to manage that infrastructure. Here is what you can check.

What is their Internet bandwidth. (Consider the per capita bandwidth.)
Do they have their own domain name for the website.
Do they list some email addresses for faculty, and others on the website. If yes, are these addresses from free service provides (yahoo, gmail, rediffmail, etc.), or are these of the domain name of the college. If everyone seems to be using yahoo and gamil accounts, then it means that they do not provide a good email service internally.
Do they have BOTH a Windows lab and a Linux lab. Ideally CS departments should be preparing you for both Windows and Linux platforms.

Another parameter in determining a good college is to look at what happens to their students after they graduate. After all, you want to study there because you feel that the education will result in a good career for you. But Do not over-emphasize this parameter. So look for the information on the following:

What all companies did they attract for campus placement. Do they attract any multinationals. Do they attract only those IT companies who have local offices, or companies with no presence in the local town also come to the college.
What percentage of their students got hired by these companies.
What is the average and median salaries. (Maximum salaries are attractive but very deceptive. Beware of colleges which only talk about the highest salaries.)
How many people are going for higher studies, whether in India or abroad, whether for doing MS/MTech or for doing MBA.
Do these students care about the college after they graduate. In particular, does college have an associated Alumni Association. Is there any interaction (not necessarily donations, may be just visits) between alumni and the college.

Research output of a department is another factor to look at. One might argue that research is not that important for undergraduate education. Firstly, I do not agree with that statement. Doing research keeps a teacher uptodate on the area, and makes his/her understanding of the subject better. This can only help the quality of teaching. But more importantly, research flourishes when there is an institutional support for it. If faculty members are doing research, then it shows that the college management is serious about the quality of education. Research can be measured by the following parameters.

Publication by faculty members. Higher preference should be given to peer-reviewed journals and conferences of high quality and reputation. Then one should also look at local conferences. At least someone is putting some effort in the right direction.
Sponsored research projects by various funding agencies like Department of Science and Technology (DST), AICTE, Dept of Information Technology, etc.
Any industry interaction in terms of research projects or consultancy.
Do they invite several researchers to give seminars.
Do they organize workshops and conferences.
Does college management have any scheme to reward good research.

What do others say about this college.

Have they been ranked by any major survey like India Today, Data Quest, etc. Note that most of these surveys are only about perceptions and not realities. And it is not that easy to get all the comparable information any way. So take the ranking information with a HUGE pinch of salt.
Has the college gone through any formal accreditation by AICTE (NBA) or NAAC, etc. If yes, what is the result.
Is it a deemed university.
I wouldn't be swayed by the number of MoUs or exchange programs that a college may have with so-called foreign universities.

A few miscellaneous things. They are gross generalizations, hence be careful in applying them to specific instances.

A fully residential or at least mostly residential college has a much better environment than a college which has mostly day scholars.

On a couple of occasions above, I have referred to the status of Deemed University. In my opinion, it is very important to be declared as deemed to be university. When you get this status, you can decide your own academic processes, including curriculum, exams, grading, and even admissions, etc.

Invariably, colleges with this kind of autonomy have much better quality of education than others.

CONVERSION OF IT BHU INTO IIT VARANASI

the conversion of it bhu into iit v,has been in the news for a very long time.IT bhu was established inrround 1920 much before the IIT s were made it has been a college which has produced world class engineers for generations,but with the formation of iits the status of the college has reduced over the years.AT present date it is ranked 8th.
The main reasons for conversion of it bhu into iit is

1. The IITs started taking shape in late 60s and early 70s. It was only till then, that the good institutions were 'treated' as equals or better than the IITs by the Government of India.

2. The IITs come directly under the Ministry of HRD while most others Central Universities and Institutes, including BHU come under the UGC. The rules that apply to IITs are different from BHU, including the annual funding, approval of research grants, allotment of projects and pay scale of faculty members.

3. In today’s scenario of academia, research grant from the Government seems easier to receive, if the proposal is from an IIT rather than from IT-BHU. This also
holds true for grants to students/faculty to participate in national and international conferences.

4. A fresh faculty member joins the IITs at the pay scale of a Reader in IT-BHU while it takes a Lecturer around 7~10 years in an institute like IT-BHU to reach that pay scale. The supporting funds which IT-BHU receives are somewhere in between of a quarter to a half of that an IIT receives. This in the end reflects on facilities being made available to faculty and students like - on campus housing, research grants etc. Also it has been witnessed that the institute has been trying to seek funds from the Government for different necessary developmental measures but things have not developed yet.

5. The admissions to IT-BHU have suffered as more and more IITs are coming up. This is because students’ first preference to join the IITs and then to evaluate the option of coming to BHU, is resulting in students with lower IIT-JEE ranks joining our institute. With IT-BHU converted into an IIT, quality of incoming students would improve. This is proven by higher ranked IIT-JEE students joining IIT-Guwahati and IIT-Roorkee rather than IT-BHU.

At this time (unfortunately), IT-BHU can be proud of its heritage but many a less credits of the present. The future will depend on how things shape up in the contemporary scenario and what we do to assist the institute to nurture the best possible support and environment to go ahead into the race of development and excellence.

Ans: Extended merit list is drawn up after making some relaxation in aggregate marks and is used by other institutions for admission to their programmes. Question Papers

There will be two question papers, each of three hours duration. Both the question papers would consist of three separate sections on Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. Questions in these papers will be of objective type, which are to be answered on a specially designed machine-gradable sheet (ORS – Optical Response Sheet) using HB pencils only. Incorrect answers will be awarded negative marks.

Language and Font of Question Papers

Candidates can opt for Question Papers either in English or in Hindi. This option should be exercised while filling the application form. It cannot be changed at any later stage.

Visually impaired candidates, on request, will be provided with question papers with 20% enlarged font.

Calculating Aids

Use of log tables and any electronic calculating aids are NOT permitted in JEE-2009.

Aptitude Test for B.Arch. and B.Des.

Candidates called for counselling and desirous of joining the B.Arch. and B.Des. courses will be required to qualify in an Aptitude Test to be conducted at each counselling institute on June 11 and June 15, 2009. The test will consist of one paper of three hours duration – from 10:00 to 13:00 hrs. Candidates who fail to qualify in the Aptitude Test will not be eligible for admission to either B.Arch. or B.Des. courses. Question papers for aptitude test for B.Arch and B.Des will be in English only. The candidate should write the test only once, either on June 11 or June 15, 2009.

RESERVATION OF SEATS

OBC candidates

For OBC candidates belonging to Non-creamy layer, 18% of total number of seats are reserved in each of the older IITs (Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee), IT-BHU, Varanasi and ISMU, Dhanbad and 27% of total number of seats are reserved in each of the new IITs (Bhubaneswar, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Patna, Punjab and Rajasthan. Candidates belonging to this category are admitted on the basis of a relaxed criterion as given in the page for ranking.

OBC candidates belonging to Non-creamy layer will be required to produce the original certificate issued on or after January 1, 2009 by a competent authority in the prescribed format. The certificates must be produced at the time of counselling, failing which they will be treated as belonging to the General (GE) category.

ST/SC candidates

For candidates belonging to the SC and ST categories, respectively 15% and 7.5% of the total number of seats are reserved in each IIT, IT-BHU, Varanasi and ISMU, Dhanbad. Candidates belonging to these categories are admitted on the basis of a relaxed criterion as given in the page for ranking. In case all the reserved seats are not filled, a limited number of candidates are admitted to a Preparatory Course of one-year duration on the basis of a further relaxation in JEE performance. This course attempts to prepare the students in Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. On successful completion of the course, the students will be offered direct admission to the undergraduate programmes in July 2010 against the unfilled SC/ST seats of JEE-2009.

SC and ST candidates will be required to produce the original caste/tribe certificate issued by a competent authority in the prescribed format. The certificates must be produced at the time of counselling, failing which they will not be considered for admission. Seats remaining vacant in these categories shall not be filled by candidates belonging to any other category.

JAB Decision on unfilled SC/ST seats in new IITs

The Joint Admission Board (JAB) in its meeting held on August 13, 2008 decided that the vacant seats in SC/ST categories against JEE-2008 in six new IITs will carried forward and added to the seats in the respective programmes in JEE-2009 as one time measure. The numbers of vacant seats in SC and ST categories are 19 and 47, respectively.

Persons with Physical Disability (PD)

For PD (including leprosy-cured) candidates, who are otherwise fit to pursue the course, and qualify JEE (with relaxed norms as given in the page for ranking), 3% seats are reserved as specified by the Government of India. For any category of disability (viz., locomotor, visual, speech, and/or hearing), benefit would be given to those candidates who have at least 40% permanent physical impairment in relation to a body part / system / extremity / extremities / whole body, etc.

The candidates in this category will be required to be certified by a Medical Board. The Medical Board will decide the following:

whether the candidate qualifies for the benefits under this category, and
if the disability is likely to interfere in his/her studies.

The Medical Board duly constituted for this purpose shall meet at the time of counselling at a few venues (to be announced in the counselling letter) between June 9 to 11, 2009. Candidates, who are not certified by the Medical Board as belonging to the PD category, will not be counselled under this category. The decision of the Medical Board shall be final.

JAB decisions on PD candidates.

In accordance with the Judgment of the Court of Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities dated 7 August 2008 and the orders of the Hon’ble Supreme Court the Joint Admission Board (JAB) for JEE-2009 decided that the extent of relaxation to the PD candidates in JEE-2009 will be the same as that is available to the candidates belonging to SC/ST categories, irrespective of their vertical categories.

The Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities has given a directive to implement Preparatory Courses for PD students in a similar manner as is done for SC/ST students. A decision on this will be taken in a Joint Admission Board meeting.

MERIT LIST IN IIT JEE 2009

Ranking

Only those candidates who attempt both Paper 1 and Paper 2 will be considered for the ranking. Marks in Chemistry in JEE will be equal to marks in Chemistry section of Paper 1 + marks in Chemistry section of Paper 2. Similar procedure will be followed for Mathematics and Physics. The sum of the marks obtained in the individual subjects in JEE will be the aggregate mark for the candidate.
The average of the marks scored by all such candidates will be computed for each of the three subjects. These will be the minimum qualifying mark for ranking (MQMR) in the individual subjects.
Based on the MQMR in the individual subjects as well as the aggregate marks in the Examination, a common merit list (CML) will be prepared, without any relaxed criteria, such that the number of general category (GE) candidates in this list is 1.15 times the number of available unreserved seats. The aggregate marks scored by the last candidate in the CML will be the CML cut-off score (CCS).
Next, the merit list of the OBC candidates will be prepared. If the number of OBC candidates in the CML is equal to or more than 1.4 times the number of available OBC seats, then the OBC merit list will contain all these candidates.
In case the number of OBC candidates qualified in the CML is less than 1.4 times the number of available OBC seats, then relaxation (maximum of 10%) to the individual MQMR as well as to the CCS will be applied, and an OBC merit list will be prepared, in which the number of candidates will be, at the most, 1.4 times the number of available OBC seats.
By applying 50% relaxation to the individual MQMR as well as to the CCS, separate merit lists for SC, ST and PD candidates will be prepared. The number of candidates in each of these lists will be, at the most, 1.4 times the number of available seats in the respective categories.
While preparing these merit lists, if a candidate belongs to more than one category/subcategory of relaxed norms, then he/she for the purpose of ranking shall be considered in all the categories in which he/she qualifies. There will be no separate wait-list of candidates.
Tie-Break
The tie-break criterion in the CML and in the category lists adopted for awarding ranks to the candidates who have scored the same aggregate marks is as follows.
For each subject, the mean (i.e., the average) marks will be calculated on the basis of the marks obtained by those candidates who have scored more than or equal to MQMR in that subject.
Among the candidates having the same aggregate marks, a candidate will be ranked higher than the rest, if he/she has scored higher marks in the subject having the lowest mean mark calculated as above. If there is a tie after this procedure, then the marks obtained by the tied candidates in the subject with the second-lowest mean marks will be considered, and the above procedure repeated. Candidates tied even after this procedure will be given the same rank.

The age limit for appearing in IIT-JEE is 25 years. For candidates belonging to SC, ST and PD categories, the relaxed age limit is 30 years. Also, starting 2007, a candidate can take the JEE two times at the most. This has been done mainly to reduce stress on students and discourage the concept of "cram schools" — where students are made to memorize all types of possible exam questions. Furthermore, from 2007 on, students who are selected for admission to an IIT cannot attempt the examination again in the future. From 2008 six new IITs have been opened with 120 seats each increasing the total no.of seats to almost 7000.
